“Welcome to the new website of the Hampshire Bowling Clubs Past Presidents Association. Please enjoy the content and we hope you will find something of interest to you.”
In 1953 a number of Past Presidents from Atherley Bowling Club and the Southampton area were relaxing over drinks in the bar following a meeting. They decided that such enjoyable socialising seemed to be limited to occasions when there was admin work to do or committee meetings to attend so they resolved to meet from time to time purely for some convivial socialising.
Thus ‘The 1953 Presidents Club’ was born. Mr P Journeaux was elected the first President and remained so for the next 5 years. The first friendly match was not arranged until July 1956 and was played against the Bournemouth & District BA. In 1957, following a 6 rink match against the Isle of Wight CBA at J S White Ltd in Cowes, the Southern Daily Echo reported ‘BOWLS WIN FOR PAST PRESIDENTS’ and so the decision was taken to change the name to ‘The Hampshire Bowling Clubs Past Presidents Association’. This title change marked the aim to widen interest across Hampshire.
The Association’s object was, and still is, to foster the Spirit of Fellowship in the game of bowls and members drink a toast in these terms at each of our convivial annual luncheons.
Membership of the Association is open to Past Presidents of Bowls Hampshire, or its precursor Hampshire County Bowling Association, Hampshire Indoor Bowling Association and Past Presidents of Clubs affiliated to BH, HIBA and Kindred Associations. Serving Presidents may also apply for membership.
